Today I ran my third half marathon - or an entry I like to call - This Is What We Trained For
My first half-marathon was back in May of 2007 - the Capital City Half Marathon. This was to be my 8th "career" race - and longest run yet. At this point in my running life, I hadn't ever attempted a formalized training plan or really had that good of an idea as to what I should be doing, especially when it came to the amount of long runs I got done. I just kept doing what I had done before and that was to run a little further every week. But I would learn that distance isn't the only thing one should concentrate on.
Long story short - I was hurting after mile 9. The route had a pretty steep hill on mile 9 to 10, and after I crested that hill, I never regained whatever pace it was that I was barely holding onto. I hadn't ever thought about hills during my training, plus I realized that I needed to get more than one ten+ miler in if I was to ever succeed at this distance.
Final time: 2:21:30 (unofficial watch time)
The following year - May of 2008 - I ran my first full marathon - but that isn't part of the half marathon story.
In November of 2008, I attempted my second half marathon - the Seattle Half Marathon. This was to be my 17th race. After learning what worked and didn't work during my marathon training, I thought I had this. What I didn't count on was being sick the three weeks before the race, and missing my last two long training runs. Not to mention running a 5k obstacle course two weeks before the half. I also experienced the feeling that there was a chance I wouldn't be able to finish for the first time. Still not exactly sure what the issue was, but I was experiencing some pretty nasty pain in one of my knees - so painful in fact I seriously gave thought to how I'd get back if I just stopped. Somehow I pulled through and hobbled to the finish line.
Final time: 2:25:52 (unofficial watch time) - so much for beating my time.
And now that brings me to today. I gave thought to re-running the Tacoma City Marathon, but after a slow start in January, and the abysmal personal performance in November, I thought that I should stick with the half marathon distance until I was as comfortable at that distance as I could be (as one can be running 13 miles.) There were plenty more long runs, and I made absolutely sure to train for hills by running a 7.5, 11, and 13 mile route that included some pretty good hills. I also had a damn fine running partner - Olive, my little black dog. I was ready.
My goals were to finish in 2:10 (approximately a 10:00/mile pace,) and if that wasn't possible, I would have liked to finish running the whole distance, or at the very least, somehow finish faster than the 2:20 finish from two years ago.
The weather was ideal - upper 40s that turned into the low 50s, clear, sunny, no wind, and fortunately, no rain (unlike the day before where it poured and poured.) And while I struggled with my own personal issues of being at the race alone, I kept telling myself that this is for me - this race is why I trained all those weeks during those cold and wet and windy Saturday mornings when I would have rather been in bed. This is why my little black dog is buff. We trained. This is what we trained for.
My first mile was faster than I wanted - I wanted to keep at the 10:00/mile pace, but had a hard time holding myself back, so I decided that I would just go with the flow and listen to how my body felt.
I still haven't seen the official time, or even the unofficial time, but I know what my watch told me. But even before I looked at the data, I knew that when I crossed the finish line that I had kicked ass.
My Garmin said the following:
13.13 miles - 2:05:13
I blew all of my time goals out of the water! And I ran the whole distance. I cannot begin to explain how awesome that finish time was for me - and how it exceeded even my wildest of imagination. It's just absolutely wonderful!
The splits were as follows:
Mile 1: 9:33.65 Mile 2: 9:44.69 Mile 3: 9:47.26 Mile 4: 9:37.42 Mile 5: 9:15.86 Mile 6: 9:21.81 Mile 7: 9:19.76 Mile 8: 9:10.76 Mile 9: 9:04.13 Mile 10: 9:32.24 Mile 11: 9:42.01 Mile 12: 10:18.65 <---- I didn't realize how steep those downtown streets were! Mile 13: 9:43.34 Mile 0.13: 7:51 pace
I felt that I maintained a pretty consistent pace overall - got a lot faster late in the race, and then I slowed down a lot at mile 12 - but I had earned enough time earlier to offset that.
Still elated - this went so much better than I had ever expected. And that makes all those Saturday mornings that I didn't sleep in that much more worth it.
Next - the Furry 5k at Seward Park, Seattle. This time, Olive gets to come with me.
Wednesday , April 29th, 2009 08:07 pm
Olive and I just finished our last run for April.
Secret C was supposed to join us, but alas, it ended up being me and one cute girl instead of two.
And now I rest - the Tacoma City Half Marathon is on Sunday - only four days away.
My time goals are as follows:
1) 2:10 finish time (this is why I've been pushing myself on the Point Defiance loops) 2) Running the entire distance - no walking and 3) To have a finish time better than 2:21:30 which was my my best finish time for a half marathon (Capital City Half Marathon - May 20, 2007 - oddly enough it was also my first half marathon)

Up quite a bit later than planned - I blame that on the fact that I didn't get to bed until around 1 this morning. I stayed up late watching my other library movie.
Made some coffee, having some cereal. Probably get ready for my run in about an hour or so. There was quite a bit of temptation this morning to just not run today because of the late hour, and also due to the rain, but I can't let either of those stop me. I really need the next two weekends of long runs to get me ready for my half marathon, especially if I want to have any sort of chance of besting my time from the Capital City Half I ran last year. This afternoon was my twelve mile training run.
Even though I still did the entire 12 miles in 2 hours exactly (right on pace with my 10 minute miles - including "fuel" breaks,) I felt that this run was one of the hardest that I've done before.
Ignoring the painful right nipple (thinking that I need to bring Body Glide with me for runs longer than ten miles so I can reapply,) my feet and left knee were all hurting me. My knee still hurts right now in fact, and it's been four hours since I ran.
Not sure if it's my shoes (they are ready to be retired) or what. I hope that new shoes will solve the painful feet issues along with the knee.
Best part of today's run - I was on pace to beat my half marathon time from last year. Oh - and today's run put me over the 1400 mile mark.
Sunday , March 2nd, 2008 06:52 pm
Today's run was my third longest run - ever. The only runs longer have been an 11.01 mile training run back in April of 2007, and then the only half marathon that I ran back in May of 2007.
Did 10.15 miles - and somehow managed to maintain a 9:50 pace - which included two walking/water breaks and one walking/water/fuel break.
After about 8 miles, I was starting to feel run down, but kept plugging away at it, and eventually made it back home. I had to find some distance on today's route since I severely underestimated just how far ten miles was.
I also learned about another area that can chafe while running - my collar bones on both sides were pretty chafed when I got home. I never noticed any irritation on the run, just when I finished. Guess that in addition to a new pair of shoes here soon, I'm going to need to pick up another stick of Body Glide.
Speaking of shoes - I do believe that it's time retire a pair of my Brooks - the second version of the test GTS 8's that I was given in June of 2007 to run in. After last week's runs, those shoes now have over 360 miles on them. The first pair of test GTS 8's have just a bit over 300 miles, so those won't be lasting much longer. I do have one pair of brand new GTS 6's that I'll be using here pretty soon, but I know that I'll need to buy a new pair here this month.
Oh - also registered for my first race of 2008 - the 2008 St. Patrick's Day Dash up in Seattle. I ran this race last year, and I've been itching to do a race here one weekend, so this was as good as any. Besides, the last couple of races I've thought of entering, I never got around to it. My only concern is that on the day of the race, I'm scheduled to a 12 mile training run. Might have to this run in two parts - 3.5 in the morning, and the remaining 8.5 when I get home.

1/27 - 2/2
Total Mileage: 26.13 Longest Run: 7.00 (1/27)
Six total runs for the week, one with Koda (2/2 for 4.6 miles)
Weight on 2/1 - 192 pounds - same as two weeks ago (always good.)
Something new this week - food while running.
My friend Dina - a veteran of a handful of marathons and even a couple of Iron Man Woman triathalons - said that I should start thinking about food/fuel sources while running. So this past week, I picked up a variety of Clif Shots and Cliff Shot Bloks from REI. On Thursday's long run, I tried the Razz flavor of the Clif Shot (it's a gel) at my three mile turn around. It was a bit thicker and warmer than I was expecting. Not sure about it yet - but from that one taste, I have a feeling that the fruit flavors are going to probably end up being the ones I use, because I just don't see how the coffee flavored ones are going to be any good.
Tomorrow's long run I will try the Bloks out. The Bloks look like they'll taste better, but the problem is running with them. The Shots have this neat little "hook" or loop on the package which is designed to hang off a belt of some sort, while the Bloks don't. Plus, the Bloks are two "shots" and I don't know if I need that much yet.
It's just all so new.
Total mileage for January - 109.73 - my best month ever. Previously, April 2007 was my best at 105.42 in which I was preparing for the Capital City Half Marathon.
Thursday , January 17th, 2008 08:35 pm
Training is going good so far. Today’s run was scheduled to be a six miler – I ended up doing 6.28 miles – I didn’t want to turn around when mile three came up, so I kept running to where the trail I was on ended more naturally. Well, as natural as a paved trail coming to a T by the freeway can end.
Total time was 63 minutes which I’m quite pleased with. I walked for about two and a half minutes at the halfway point – I do better running when it’s a circle instead of an out and back – out and backs always make me bored on the way back, so I usually end up walking at the turnaround spot. Still averaged about a ten minute mile which isn’t bad, considering the distance I’m currently at.
Speaking of distances, I was looking at all my running data and came across some interesting (to me at least) numbers:
Since April of 2006:
Total runs over six miles: 20 Total runs over seven miles: 6 Total runs over eight miles: 4 Total runs over nine miles: 3 Total runs over ten miles: 2 Total runs over eleven miles: 2 Total runs over twelve miles: 1 Total runs over thirteen miles: 1
And that is all done is 298 “logged” runs. Obviously I don’t seem to get past the seven mile mark very often, which is probably why I struggled when I ran my half-marathon last year. Speaking of which, is it any wonder I hit a wall at mile ten and never full recovered from that (on that run)?
Next week’s runs will be very similar to this week’s: A six-miler on Sunday, a four-miler on Tuesday, a six-miler on Thursday, and then a four-miler on Saturday. I am allowed to run on Wednesday and Friday, but they have to be easy runs – I won’t be running on Monday since that’s my recovery day. The only difference is that next week, instead of running in the Seattle/Tacoma area, I will be running in beautiful San Diego. The weather information is kind of funny – weather.com gives you a fitness forecast – for most of next week, the forecast is listed as a nine (out of ten – comfortable I believe) because it’ll be 65 and sunny. There are a few days where light rain is predicted, and the temperature will be around 53 – and it’s listed as a five (out of ten.) To me, the 53 and rain is much nicer than 65 and sunny. Guess I’m strange.

Running related stuff that is probably only interesting to me
December was my third highest mileage month for 2007 - and my fourth highest mileage month ever. I managed to run 73.78 miles this month.
For 2007 - I ran 700.13 miles (obviously my best year since it has been my only complete year of running.) For comparison, I ran 463.67 miles in 2006.
I ran:
2 5k Races 1 5k+ Race 1 Half Marathon 1 HTC Relay
The Furry 5k was ran in both 2006 and 2007 - 2007's pace was an improvement of approximately 44 seconds per mile.
After HTC (August 24th and 25,) I took approximately two months off to nurse my right hip flexor back to health - 20.22 miles in September and 15.75 miles in October - my two lowest months ever.
Sunday , August 12th, 2007 10:13 am
I was trying to get an idea of what the hills look like that I've ran, and compare them to what I'm expected to run for HTC.
Here are yesterday's hills:

Then for kicks and giggles, here is the Furry 5k hill from a month or so ago: (My very first hill that I ever attempted over a year ago)

And the Capital City Half:
The hill right at 9.5 miles is what killed me - I wasn't prepared for something like that, especially at that distance. I never recovered properly the rest of the race.
And the 12ks of Christmas (which I'm still VERY surprised that I maintained a 9:26 pace for this run - I can barely do that in my training runs. I need to find a way to have that race intensity when I'm training:)
Obviously these hills were the worst that I have ever run on, but I never once stopped running - ever - and I still maintained a 9:26 pace.
So by looking at these, I can tell you that Leg 27 (5.98 miles - moderate rating) shouldn't provide any problems other than exhaustion. It's a rolling course, but the gains and losses are all minimal - nothing over 25 feet either way at one time.
Leg 15 (7.25 miles - hard rating) shouldn't be too bad since, like the leg above, which technically happens after this leg . . .) it has rolling hills at times, with elevation gains no higher (or lower) than 50 feet. Plus I also have to factor in the fact that this leg will be ran right around midnight.
Now Leg 3 is a different story. Rated easy and goes for 3.93 miles - the entire leg is downhill. Over those four miles, I'm dropping about a thousand feet in elevation. A thousand feet! Advice given - go slow, and then go even slower, and to take small steps. Even though it's downhill and easy, it's too easy to want to want to catch up with the people in front of you and to wear yourself out. I also have to consider that less than 12 hours after running this leg, I have my 7 miler in the middle of the night to run.

Almost forgot -
Tonight is the 2007 Seafair Torchlight Run.
Last year, this race was my second race ever and I had a blast. It was the "baby step" that I needed to prepare me for the 10k I was thinking about doing in September, which of course led me down the path of running a half marathon just this past May.
I wanted to re-run all of last year's races just to see how much I have improved - I successfully completed the Furry 5k again and set a new PR for myself - but I wasn't sure about this run for some reason. Guess it works out though since I'm not feeling very well and the last thing I need to do is to go running.

My official Capital City Half Marathon picture has arrived!
And my eyes are closed?
Yes - my eyes are closed!! What luck I have. Oh well.
There's some strange water spots on the picture (from the camera since it was a bit drizzly that morning.) The wetness on me though - that's sweat - because I ran my ass off!

In other news - did you know they make taco shells that stand up so you can fill them easily? I did not know this - my taco shell knowledge was surely lacking. And - Greg Rucka has a blog journal - ruckawriterAnd - it's a very nice feeling being home before 7 pm on a work night. When the sun is out. Oh - and you'll never guess how much the wife spent on her newest purse? Let's just say that I am now able to replace my ailing drysuit and still spend less.

Here's my running and diving entry:
Oh wonderful weather in the 60s, oh how I've missed you! While not quite where I was before my half marathon, today's run was so much better than all of last week's runs. I'm just not used to running in 80 degree weather yet (not sure I will ever be for that matter.)
I'm not sure if we'll be doing the 2007 Furry 5k or not. Part me isn't too interested (and neither is the wife) but then again, part of me really wants to do a repeat of every race I ran last year just to see how much (if any) I have improved in a year's time.
Not that there will be any shortage of 5ks or anything . . .
Today I filled out my registration slip for the 2007 Hood to Coast Relay. It's 11 weeks ago! I am beyond excited!
Jerome made it back from San Diego and we thought about diving on Sunday, but with the weather being as gorgeous as it was (no parking at the dive sites then) and the fact that I needed to be home with my dog, diving is put on hold. Not even sure if we'll be diving this weekend since Pierce County is having a passport fair on Saturday and I need to take care of that, and then Sunday is the possible race mentioned above. Just have to see how everything comes together.
Sunday , May 27th, 2007 09:48 am
This morning I did my first run since last week's half-marathon. While not my best run ever, I did a little over four miles in about 45 minutes or so. (I don't recall exact distances and times.) Far too much walking for my taste, but I can see why - mainly for some reason I kept pushing myself harder than my normal pace.
Just have to see what tomorrow brings.
Off to enjoy my authentic 100% Kona coffee in my Hawaii Starbucks mug.
Edit: 4.34 miles in 45:34
Thursday , May 24th, 2007 08:09 pm
The word on the street is that I look the same in every picture so far.

I think I look pretty good considering this was taken right before the finish line. (Of course, when I saw the photographer, I had to make sure that I was actually running instead of crawling at this point.)
(And yes, I do plan on buying the real picture.)
Wednesday , May 23rd, 2007 09:50 pm
Not that I trust the cheap-o scale in the bathroom, but I still don't necessarily appreciate the weight that it is giving me. I can tell that I've put on about five or ten since I last weighed myself about five weeks or so ago, but twenty? I hope that that is not the case. Some weight gain is expected - my running has slowed down, and then I was on vacation, and now after I ran my last race, I've been starving when it comes to meal times.
My body is pretty good with the results of my run - I was VERY sore on Monday, little less sore yesterday, and now I can barely feel any soreness, other than when I walk down stairs. My quads are still a bit sore.
Now, my chest is a whole other experience. Neosporin and Band-Aids have become new best friends. At least I'm not bleeding anymore.
I wonder when my race picture will be ready - I'm excited about seeing it since I think I got a good one taken of me.
Had a checkup appointment at the dermatologist this morning. The official diagnosis is rosacea.
I'm going to start running again this weekend - I miss it, and it's only been three days since I've done it last. I'm going to hopefully run the 2007 Furry 5k in a few weeks. Marks my one year racing anniversary. The Rainier to Ruston Relay is off - I'm a little bummed, but it's okay.
Something else I haven't done in a while - cold water diving. Have a dive planned first thing Saturday - and maybe another one Sunday (slim chance for Sunday though.)
I think it's time for bed.
Sunday , May 20th, 2007 08:00 pm
And because my journal isn't quite full enough with running related entries today:
Not sure why my scan was off . . .
Yeah, I'm just a wee bit proud of myself today.
Sunday , May 20th, 2007 06:03 pm
Guess I now know the unofficial official results:

And I also know that there were 796 runners - very small group for certain. Plus, looking at the results for the full marathon, I was only faster by ten minutes by the fastest marathon runner. Scary.
OH! And realizing at mile 7 or so that you forgot to put Body Glide on - not good. I don't think my nipples will ever be the same again . . .
Sunday , May 20th, 2007 03:08 pm
It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway - I am beat. I don't think there's a part of my legs that aren't throbbing. But you know what - I'm proud of myself that I attempted this run, and I finished.
Today's race is quite possibly the most challenging thing I have EVER done physically.
Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I found the race area easily enough - even though the directions were a bit iffy that were posted on the official website. The directions would have been awesome IF the roads weren't closed because of the race. So yeah, found the park, then found a good parking space (and did an amazing job parallel parking too!) then went off to get my race number, chip and t-shirt. Since I was parked so close to the park, I returned to my car and threw in all my extra stuff. Weather wasn't as bad as I was fearing - in the mid 50s with a slight drizzle every now and then. Occasionally we ran into some winds, but they weren't too bad - I've ran in worse that's for certain. The start of the race was promptly at 7:45 - signaled by a giant cannon blast of some sort - no chance of not hearing the official start. I'm not sure how many runners there were, but not many compared to the shorter runs that I've done. Only took about 30 seconds or so to get to the actual starting line after the cannon went off. And since there wasn't hordes of people, we all fell into our paces pretty nicely. My first official walking break was shortly after the 4 mile mark - I walked for a few moments to drink my water, and then I was off again. Overall, I walked a lot more often that I had planned. My body was trying to sabotage me at about the 9 mile mark. There was this hill that went across the freeway that just took so much out of me, and every step of the way after ten miles was not easy. Lots of "run for three minutes, walk for a minute and a half." My calves felt like they did when I did my long run down on Ruston - very tight and heavy. But my back never hurt at all during the race. Not sure of my official time, but my Garmin says I completed the course in 2:21:31 which is a bit slower than my ten minute/mile pace, but better than the 2:30 that I put as low (or is it high?) goal. I can't be disappointed in the time since I have never ran this distance before, and it gives me something to challenge myself to do better on next time (something that I'm challenging myself on every repeat race that I run this year.) Here's an image of the course: (SportTracks is one second off compared to Garmin's official software's time.) And now I'm looking forward to doing a whole lot of nothing for the remainder of the day.

Found the race easily enough, even though the directions were quite vague, they ended up being pretty easy to find.
Now all I need to do is wait until the race starts, which is in about 20 minutes. Guess I need to get out of my car huh?

Last message about this until it's over with -
In less than a day and a half, I will be down in Olympia attempting my first half-marathon. I'm a bit freaked out it, but am pretty confident that I won't die - and might even finish.
Public goals time:
Perfect world: Two hours even (slightly slower than a nine minute/mile pace.) Make me happy goal: 2 hours 11 minutes (a ten minute/mile pace.) Be okay with since I've never done this before goal: 2 hours 30 minutes (slightly faster than a 11:30 minute/mile pace.)
Also found out that I might get a chance to do the Rainier to Ruston Relay. I'll say more when I know more about this one.
Real post later.

Well, I did it - did my long run this morning down on Ruston Way.
Overall, I think I did better than I did two weeks ago.
Here's my route:

Looks the same as last time, but it was a few out and backs and repeats. Did discover that I can loop around under Schuster Parkway.
"Only" managed 11.01 (Garmin) miles. (The picture shows an adjusted distance of 11.10 miles - not sure why the time is off though - Garmin shows a time of 1:51:58 for today's run..
Like last time, and the week before that, today's run was my longest run ever. And boy did I ever feel it. The last mile, my quads and calves both felt super heavy and tight. Never experienced anything like that before. It wasn't too bad though, but just bad enough to make me question myself that I can run for 13 miles.
My overall pace was right at 10:00 minutes a mile. Slower than both my 10k and 12k paces but that's probably due to the increased distance. Eleven miles is quite a bit different than 6 or even 7+ miles. As long as I can maintain a 10:00 minute/mile pace for the whole run I will be a very happy camper.
I did luck out today regarding the weather - it was supposed to be overcast and rainy. The truth was practically the exact opposite. Clear blue skies and in the mid to upper 60s. Couldn't have asked for a better day. One bad part about nice days - people. Lots and lots of people. Just like when it's nice out and you're trying to go diving.

This morning is all ready sucking quite a bit.
I first wake up at 7 (so much for trying to get 8 hours of sleep and sleeping in) and discover that the dog has shit all over his kennel. Again. (It was just yesterday morning where I spent some time cleaning up a similar mess.) After cleaning that up, I realize that the reason Grocible is crying in the bathroom is that he has thrown up on the floor and wanted out. Clean that up before I realize that the poop smell I smell isn't from the dog's mess - it's from the little present that Grocible has left me in the bathtub. (He eats his special foods in the bathroom so that the other cats don't eat it, and sometimes he gets left in there too long. Fortunately he's learned that it's best for him to poop in the bathtub.) And yet another mess is cleaned up.
Diving last night was a bust, and tonight isn't going to work out either. So my drysuit is going to be dropped off at UWS to have it leak checked and hopefully repair the leaking. And I need to get my DIN regs swapped out for my yoke regs so I can go diving in Hawaii. Speaking of which, the guy from the dive place hasn't e-mailed me back yet. If I don't hear from him by tomorrow, I'll check another place and see what they can tell me. I just hope my Hawaii pictures turn out because I've only gotten to dive one whole time with my new camera.
Supposed to do my long run today - but I'm not mentally ready for it yet. But I'm going to go. All my stuff is right here next to me and all it's going to take is me changing clothes and then driving down to Ruston and finding ten miles to run. Do I dare run up 30th street? That'll kick my ass because of how steep that hill is . . . Afterwards, I'll drop Jerome's tanks off, go to Costco, pick up the wife lunch and then go to UWS. I'll be a sight for sure . . .
Seven days until we leave for Hawaii . . . Twenty-one days until my half-marathon . . .
